What Is a Silat?

Discover the benefits of using a silpat and how you can achieve better baking results with easier cleanup!

What Is A Silpat?

A silpat is a type of non-stick baking mat that’s made of food-grade silicone. It’s designed to make baking and cooking easier and more efficient by preventing food from sticking to baking sheets or other cookware. Silpats are flexible, heat-resistant, and durable. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes to fit different baking and cooking needs.
In our Traditional Sourdough Making class with instructor Maureen Diaz, she shares some great insights into the benefits and uses of a silpat. She explains that using a silpat on the flat part of a cookie sheet can make it super easy to slide your sourdough bread loaf right into the oven. This is just one of the many helpful tips you’ll learn in our class.

Why Should I Use A Silpat?

A woman in her kitchen with loaves of bread on the counter.

There are several reasons why you might want to use a silpat when baking or cooking. For one, it can help to prevent food from sticking to baking sheets or other cookware, which can make cleanup easier and help you achieve better results. Silpats are also reusable, which makes them a more environmentally-friendly alternative to disposable parchment paper. Additionally, using a silpat can be a healthier option than cooking spray, as it doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals or additives.

What Can I Use Instead?

If you don’t have a silpat, there are a few alternatives that you can use. Parchment paper is a common substitute. It can be used in much the same way to prevent food from sticking to baking sheets. Foil can also be used in a pinch, although it’s important to be careful not to scratch your cookware. Some bakers also use a light coating of cooking spray or oil to prevent food from sticking.
