Why save seeds?
You might ask yourself, why bother saving seeds?
Well, as Will Bonsall explains, there are many reasons…
First, in the course of your gardening “career,” you may come across a variety that, for one reason or another, you’re especially fond of.
Maybe it’s particularly well-suited to your local environment. Maybe it matures at a time that’s more convenient for you to harvest. Maybe you just like the taste, or even the way it looks.
In those cases, you’ll definitely want to know how to save the seeds. Because seeds come and go, and that variety you love may not be available commercially for very long.
Additionally, knowing how to save seeds makes you more self-reliant, and offers some security in these uncertain times.
Sure, seeds are readily available and relatively inexpensive right now.
But who knows what the future holds? Just a few years ago, there was a nationwide seed shortage during the pandemic. Any number of scenarios could lead to another, and there’s no telling how long it could last.
Knowing how to save seeds might just give a little extra security and peace of mind… and I think we can all appreciate that.
Meet Your Instructor:
Will Bonsall
Hi, I’m Will Bonsall.
I’m the director of the Scatterseed Project, and I farm ‘veganically’ on my Maine homestead.
I first started saving seeds more than 50 years ago. My goal back then was to be self-sufficient. I wanted to buy seeds once, and never have to buy them again.
Soon I started learning about all the incredible varieties that aren’t available in seed catalogs. The varieties farmers and gardeners have kept in their families for generations. And I discovered that many of these varieties are better than anything you can get commercially.
I developed a passion for discovering and preserving those heirloom varieties, and ensuring they get passed down to the next generation.
Over the years, I guess you could say I’ve become an expert at saving seeds… but I’m mostly self-taught. Saving seeds isn’t rocket science. I can’t wait to show you how.
Stop throwing away next year's garden! Save money and grow better.
By the end of this class, you’ll be ready to:
Never Buy Seeds Again Buy the right kind of seeds and plant them so that the only reason you’ll ever look at a seed catalog is to expand your garden.
Establish A Legacy Imagine if you could grow what grandma or great-great grandpa grew. What a gift! Save seeds for the next generation, creating a legacy that will literally feed your family.
Experience Freedom Discover the simplicity of taking responsibility for your food — from seed to fruit and back again — and bask in the freedom that resilience grants you.
Spread The Love Save seeds necessary to feed your own household and enough to share with other gardeners and their families.
Create More Food Without Trying With abundant seeds, you can help your local pollinators and still have plenty to eat. Fearlessly choose which seeds you wish to propagate and which you’ll leave for the birds.
Create Peace Of Mind With Your Own Seed Vault Prepare your seeds after harvesting your garden with assurance, knowing that they'll be stored safely and will be ready to plant next spring.
