Brianna’s has a cast of characters, some of whom date back to when she was in high school.

Victoria Pruett is a 10th generation Texan.

She’s also the 10th generation to grow up in an “ingredients house,” one where cooking from scratch prevailed. (Her son is the 11th generation to grow up in such a house.)

Here is how you find out if someone is a real gardener:

Ask them about their first one.

Chelsea needs no prompting to remember hers. She was twelve years old, and reading The Secret Garden. And there was this vacant lot near her house, an old burned-down property, probably abandoned for decades, where perennials were still coming up out of the ground every spring, stubborn and gorgeous, oblivious to the memo.
